CAROL'S BIO

Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D. has been a body language expert since the day she was born. As an infant she displayed a variety of facial expressions to signal her moods and needs, pointed at objects of interest, and first bonded with her mother through the power of eye contact. As a young girl, she assimilated those gestures and expressions that were appropriate in her family and in her culture. Then, as she grew older, Carol learned to refine (and disguise) signals that were too obvious or unwelcome.

And, just like everyone else, Carol did most of this unconsciously.

It wasn't until she was in a master's program in college, preparing to be a therapist, that Carol began to be aware of the nonverbal signals that she'd been sending and receiving all her life. Training in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and Ericksonian approaches to hypnosis and psychotherapy taught her how to observe a person's eye movements, facial expressions, and body postures to help discover their inner motivation and resistance. When Carol began consulting to business organizations and speaking to national (and then international) audiences, she paid more attention to her own body language so that the gestures, postures and expressions she used would accurately reflect the message she wanted to get across.

But it was Carol's experience as a coach that taught her about the power of body language in the workplace. She found that by focusing primarily on the behaviors of her clients (especially their body language and other nonverbal communication signals) she could accelerate their success faster than with any other coaching technique.

Carol is the president of Kinsey Consulting Services, in Berkeley, California. As a consultant, Carol helps organizations thrive in an environment of ongoing, accelerating change, As a coach, she helps leaders become more effective communicators and build productive  workplace relationships.
